My grand mother

By Ghulam Mohyuddin Wani

This  is a little story for children who have lost grand mamas and have lost them and remember them intensely. Little children remember those who love them most. Children have a fear of their parents who always teach or preach them do this and do that. It is only grand mothers who give a freedom to their grand children and never ask them by force but advice them values in stories which they conceive and perceive. I too have encountered my Grandmother whom I remember so intensely even today, even when I am too a grandfather. I remember my Grandmother even today. I was unfortunate to have lost my Grandfather before my death and have never seen my maternal grandparents as they passed away before I was born. The division of Kashmir in 1947 has also left our family divided. My father soon after my birth in 1949 had to go to find his lost business in Gilgit in 1953.It was in 1953 that all sensible kashmiri lost the hope of an united and free state if Kashmir. It was a broken promise by the Indian politicians which cunningly imprisoned the Sheik Mohammad Abdullah, the elected prime minister of Kashmir. This left the business community of Khowaja in a state of despair. They had managed to live on their saving for many years 1937-53 on the hope that kashmir will be reunited and threads of their silk route business shall be refabricated. For long most of Kashmir is shall not taste the Indian made salt from dirty waters of sea, but yawn for the rock salt of the other side, which was still kept in store by the business icons like those our forefathers. The 1953 saw a total revolution in Kashmir. I was 4 years of age then. I hardly understood the so lagan shouting mob even in Villages. I remember Aladdin khan a cross bred between the Joggers and Kashmir's whose father Yaseen Khan used to be a rich warrior .Mr Jallaudin used to lead the mob enchanting shere-e kashmir ka kai irshad Hindu –Muslim-Sikh ithad. The jails were filled with youth and men were openly ironed by one Ghulam Qadir Ganderbali who was elevated as the DG police. His tyrny and punishment to the common masses especially those who sided with Sheik or wished to be annexed with Pakistan. He camped in all village and let loose a reign of terror. Many evil youth who used to be thieves, singers and evil dovers were clubbed and organized as the rebalion National conference lead by the rebalion against Shiek Mohmad ABDULLA called as Akashi Ghulam Mohd. This was the start of the Indian Raw dominated politics of deceit in Kashmir. They propagated all evils in the state to subdue the lands of the Khowaja who never sided with evil and hardly any noble family joined the new national conference band wagan. The bhakshi led NC was constituted of all bad elements in the state. This was the era when slowly I started understanding the political affairs of the state. I remember only a few thinghs. One when I asked my grandmother why these people are shouting outside. She asked me a question. Are you with Akashi or Sheik.Innoscnetly I replied what the both says or stand by. My wise grandee explained in simple terms without a hesitation Sheik stands for our freedom and the other wishes to sell us as salves' instantly opted for Sheik and I remember a serious and meaningful smile on her lips. This was her first lesson taught to me as a child to values freedom of thought and action and never scums to the tyranny of the regime. This coasted her lot of fortune as she was branded a lady supporting the sheiks. I remember one of her brother-in-laws son Kawaka Ghulam Retool wani was the soprano of the erstwhile national conference of Sheik but later under the terror of Indian agents in 1954 left politics and became a saint. This was the background of my childhood politics. Soon this dirty politics was replaced with allotment of contracts and favours to those who became Indian agents. They were free to grab land and property of others by force. Some of the land of my Grandmother was also grabbed by one Lassa Khan Brother of the local Mammy brave grandmother fought a long battle in court and attended many courts at Handwara, sumbal and sopore courts. She used to attend these courts to represent her views accompanied by her brothers sons the mails of Patakote.I remember they used to go in a caravan consisting of few horses and some eatable. This battle was supported by her relatives, Babes of Khayer who were clerks in court and her brother's sons one of whom was employed in a local court..to be contiued as My grand mother sries 2
